"Only the one for whom the final standard is not his reason, his principles, his conscience, his freedom, his virtue, but who is ready to sacrifice all these, when in faith and sole allegiance to God he is called to obedient and responsible action: the responsible person, whose life will be nothing but an answer to God's question and call." -- Dietrich Bonhoeffer

  1. An answer to God's question and call. The question I ask myself all the time, and that I try to keep myself focused on is -- how can the church -- how can we encourage and strengthen one another inside and outside the walls to discern God's call and claim upon our lives. Bonhoeffer's comment only serves to remind me of this centrally important role in the life of the church. Last night Kathy and I had dinner with three folks in the congregation who wanted to know what "my plan" was for the church. As we talked what I found myself saying is -- "'s not much of a plan, but it is to listen for and build upon the call of God in the lives of hte people of this parish. And then you supplied the Bonhoeffer quote.
